The film premiered in Reykjavík in February 2002, but was first released at the Gothenborough Film Festival at the start of the same month. It was nominated to Nordiska Filmpriset (The Nordic Film Award) and to The Kodak Nordic Vision Award. Gemsar was elected the best film at the Digital Film Festival in Berlin and the best beginner's film at Sao Paolo International Film Festival.
